The A-List, mapped

Every name on an anonymous early-2000s celebrity rumor list, joined by who they were linked with and who they fought. Click a dot to read its entry; drag it to tug the web. All of it is hearsay.

Everything here is alleged: hearsay quoted word for word from an anonymous gossip list, never verified.

About this list

Everything on this map is hearsay.

Some of these claims were denied at the time, some contradict each other inside the list itself, and some accuse real people, many of them alive, of things they were never charged with. Read every card as “someone once claimed this”, never as fact.

Where it came from

The list called itself “A List”. Its compiler never gave a name and kept it in numbered versions; a copy of version 5.3 is dated 23 July 2003. The introduction says the entries come from hearsay, rumor and gossip, some of it the compiler’s own guesses. It also admits that John Lithgow’s entry was made up on purpose, as a joke “reward” for mentioning the site on TV, and it proudly quotes Variety’s verdict on the whole thing.

The version mapped here is a later revision from around spring 2004: it mentions Eternal Sunshine, The Passion of the Christ and the Yankees’ trade for A-Rod. It kept circulating for years on the Usenet newsgroup alt.gossip.celebrities, by email and on forums.
